The Ghana Journalists Association in the Upper East Region, ahead of the 75th anniversary of the association, has launched its 3rd regional GJA awards ceremony.
This will see the association hold the awards ceremony in the latter days of August, 2024.
The awards ceremony would be held under the theme “75 years of GJA, the contribution of the media in shaping Ghana’s democracy through peaceful and fair elections.”
It will also have Journalists receive awards for various categories including agriculture, child protection, human rights, sanitation, environment, health, disability, mining, climate change, governance and accountability, most promising journalist of the year and the journalist of the year.
Members of the awards vetting committee include, President of the Millar Institute, Prof. David Millar, a Lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Samuel Akapule and the Executive Director of Widows and Orphans Movement, Abigail Fatima Abdulai
The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga, who delivered an address on behalf of the Regional Minister Dr. Hafiz Bin-Salih, noted that the media has over the years contributed significantly to the protection of Ghana’s democracy.
“Members of the GJA have been at the forefront of social justice, ensuring the voice of the voiceless are heard. You have over the years provided the space for political parties, candidates and citizens to express their views and sell out their views and sell out their ideas and policies for informed decision making,” he stated.
While cataloguing some challenges in the media, he urged the media to uphold the highest journalistic standards in the phase of the changing dynamics due to emerging media platforms.
“Looking forward, our media must evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of information and Communication whiles maintaining its values of accuracy, fairness and integrity in your reportage”.
