Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost control of its base.
Mussa Dankwah said the party has lost not only its appeal to floating voters but also support from its core members.
This, he observed, is because the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not strong at the base and therefore, has not been to galvanize its core members.
The pollster said this while assessing the governing party leader’s decision to settle on Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh as his running-mate for the upcoming elections.
“The base is now fractured, fragmented. So who else can we bring onboard to ensure that we can organize and mobilize the base to give a better chance of breaking the 8”.
According to him, the flagbearer’s inability to galvanize the base of the party informed his decision to select Dr. Opoku-Prempeh, who is seen as a grassroots person.
“What we have seen is that Bawumia is not strong in the base so they can’t use him to galvanize the base. Then who else can we bring, obviously, mathematically, the answer is Napo.
And that’s the only reason they went for Napo and ignored people who could have appealed to people outside the (Ashanti) region”.
He, however, believes the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum would have been a better choice.
Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh and Dr. Yaw Adutwum were both reported to be considered for the position.
The flagbearer, however, nominated Dr. Opoku-Prempeh and he has been endorsed by the party’s National Council.
The party is set to unveil him in the coming days.
