Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has met with national executives of the party to discuss his choice of running-mate for the 2024 elections.
At the meeting held today at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, Dr. Bawumia officially informed the national leadership of the party of his decision to settle on Minister of Energy, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh.
National Organizer of the party, who made the disclosure about the meeting, said, “The nomination however, awaits the decision of the National Council which is the final approving organ of the NPP”.
The NPP presidential candidate has held similar talks with president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about his choice.
Reports say although the president had reservation about the person being considered for the position, he eventually accepted the nomination and offered his advice regarding the Vice-President’s choice.
He also met with the Majority Caucus of Parliament, at which he informed members of his decision.
But some members of the Caucus and party have disapproved of the selection of Opok-Prempeh for the position.
Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi in an interview following news of Dr. Opoku-Prempeh’s selection, argued that the Energy Minister is not the right candidate for the position.
“If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him ( Napo). He is not my preference,” the MP said
However, the Caucus leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for calm and respect for the choice of the party’s flagbearer.
