Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North constituency Alhassan S. Suhuyini has stated that he suspects that there is a plot to disenfranchise people given the widespread incidents of persons unable to find their names in the voter roll. In his opinion, the nature of the situation does not suggest the widespread problem is an accident.
Speaking on reports of missing names in the voters register on TV3 monitored by dreamzfmonline.com, Mr Suhuyini intimated that rather than compiling an improved register, the electoral commission has instead produced a register worse than the one they sought to improve.
“When this happens once you call it accident, when it happens the second time you call it coincidence but when it happens the third time that is a plot,” he said.
The lawmaker added that “they told us that this was going to be a better register than we have had before. What is it today? Is this better than what we had before?”
He argued that the extension of the ongoing voter registration exercise by two days will have no consequence since the names of people are missing.
“What is the use of extending the days when my name is not on the register? In my constituency alone, so far we have compiled over 400 names that have not appeared on the register so even if you extend it for five days what will the 400 people do?” He quizzed.
Meanwhile, Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), Dr Serebour Quaicoe has allayed the fears of voters whose voter identification (ID) numbers have been duplicated, explaining that such voters would be able to vote on election day if they are biometrically verified.
