The facility, christened Security Resilience And Peace Building Training and Education Centre, is part of a joint venture between the Government of Ghana and the UK Government.

Comprising training grounds and ancillary facilities, the centre occupies a vast land in the Nabdam District capital.

Already, the UK Government under its Project Karel – the UK Contribution to Counter Terrorism Activity with West Africa – is facilitating a 4-week capacity building training led by its security instructors for personnel of the Ghana security services.

Upper East Regional Police Commander, ACP Raymond Kwame Ali Adofiem said the facility is an initiative of the Inspector General of Police.

He said it has been strategically located to tackle threats of terrorism from neighbouring countries and conflicts in the Upper East and North East Regions.

“This one set to build some kind of security resilience on this corridor because you can understand that the threats from Burkina Faso is very close and also with the presence unresolved conflicts in Chereponi up to this place, the setting up of this school has really come to restore law and order and confidence in people who travel through this route,” he stated.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at the centre, Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, while expressing gratitude to the Nangodi Paramount Chief for providing land for the facility, indicated government’s commitment to furnishing the centre.

Dr. Bin Salih called for collaboration from residents to deal with insecurity and also urged them to take advantage of the economic opportunities that the location of the centre brings.

“Let’s commend ourselves as a region for playing host to two police training centres Pwalugu and Nangodi. This indicates that our region is secured in terms of external aggression from the Sahel and the maintenance of internal security and peace”.

He added, “Another benefit of this training centre in our communities is the enhancement of our local economic activities. Let’s us, therefore, take advantage of the opportunity to establish small businesses to meet the demands of these institutions”

Warrant Officer Class 1 Gavin Bage of the UK Cdo Force, who commands the Liaison and Mentoring training team for pj Karel, said his team will not only be supporting the training of the Ghanaian security but also will be strengthening the bond between the two countries.
