Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has hailed the success of the government’s flagship program, Free Senior High School (SHS).

Addressing the clergy in Bolgatanga, the regional capital of the Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the program has borne fruit, with an average annual investment of GH¢2 billion over the last seven years.

“The opportunity for people to access education was limited by the financial wherewithal of the purse, and therefore, many people were not able to access Senior High School education. This is why we [NPP Government] introduced the free senior high school for our people,” he explained.

Dr. Bawumia expressed excitement that the investment made in the free SHS policy since its implementation has significantly increased enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million as of the end of 2023, representing a 75% increase.

“We went ahead and did it, despite the naysayers and those who said it was a scam, 419,” he said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the program.

The Vice President’s remarks highlight the success of the Free SHS program, which has increased access to education for many Ghanaian students, regardless of their financial background.

The program’s impact, he said, is evident in the significant increase in enrollment and government’s dedication to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education.
