Journalists and media practitioners in the Upper East Region have been encouraged to shed light on the prevailing environmental crisis the world is grappling with.

In a statement, Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) William Jalulah reminded journalists of the crisis that threatens the very survival of living beings and urged them to leverage their profession to push for action to resolve the issue.

“As we reflect on the theme for this year, let us remind ourselves that the world is grappling with the global environmental crisis, and as such, the role of a free and responsible press becomes even more crucial,” he stated.

“Journalists play a vital role in exposing the truth, holding decision-makers accountable, and empowering the public with accurate information to drive climate action. I, therefore encourage all journalists in the region to pay more attention to issues of the environment so as to protect the future” .

William Jalulah said this while commending journalists in the region for their commitment in upholding the tenets of the profession on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

The day, which falls on May 3, is marked annually across the globe to reinforce the freedom of the press and the protection of the rights of practitioners especially in their line of duty.

The global theme for this year’s commemoration is “Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis”.

However, media professionals and practitioners in Ghana have chosen a nation theme “Leveraging journalism for sustainable environment and future.”

William Jalulah explained, “This national theme is a result of the commitment by the leadership of the GJA to lead a strong media campaign for the protection of the environment and the good of the country”.
