The Ghana Police Service has cautioned commuters to and from the Volta Region of an ongoing security operations in parts of the Volta Region.
This follows the blocking of roads by a group, believed to members of the Western Togoland secessionist group. The group reportedly blocked some roads into and out of the Volta Region, including Mepe-Sege road and Accra-Ho roads with heaps of sand impeding the flow of traffic.
The alleged members of the secessionist group who are said to be armed also attacked the Aveyime and Mepe Police Stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region and made away with all the weapons.
They are reported to have forcibly taken over the two police stations simultaneously during the early hours of Friday, September 25, 2020, overpowered the police and broke into the police armoury and absconded with weapons in the armouries.
According to eye witnesses accounts, the armed men stripped the police officers on duty naked and took away their weapons before breaking into the amoury. A vehicle at the Mepe Police Station was also driven away by the armed men, the eye witnessed accounts added.
The armed men numbering about 50, myjoyonline reports, are made up of residents of Mepe, Aveyime, Battor, and other surrounding communities.
An unidentified member who spoke to Accra based Joy FM said they have three police officers in their custody, two of whom are injured. He indicated their resolve to continue rebelling until the President of Ghana succumbs and declares them independent.
The security service is said to have cleared some of the roads as at about 7:00 GMT.
In a post on its verified social media handles, the Ghana police said “Good morning Ghana, commuters to and from Accra – Ho – Aveyime – Adidome – Mepe – Akuse – sogakope – Aflao are likely to experience traffic due to security operations within those areas. Anybody traveling on any of these roads should exercise caution.”
