Young people have been urged to abstain from alcohol consumption in order to prevent liver diseases.

Speaking in an interview on Breakfast News on Dreamz FM, physician specialist at the Upper East Regional Hospital Dr. Emmanuel Akatibo said alcohol is harmful to vital organs of the body like the liver and could result in life threatening conditions if consumed over a long period of time.

He indicated that apart from hepatitis B and C, habitual alcohol intake has been identified as a major cause of liver diseases.

Dr. Katibo noted that stopping alcohol consumption especially if you are suffering alcohol related liver condition could restore the organ to normalcy and ensure prolong life.

“For our young people, please the alcohol is not healthy. Everyday, we have people lying in the hospital. Alcohol liver disease is really damaging the youthful population, the productive population, the breadwinners of families. Alcohol is damaging a lot. Please, let’s cut down on our alcohol intake,” he stated.

He is also urging hepatitis B and C screening and adoption of measures, if detected, to prevent such conditions from degenerating into liver complications.

“If you don’t know Hepatitis status, get to the nearest hospital, let them check you. If you’re negative, we’ll vaccinate you. If you’re positive, we’ll take you through measures that will prevent complications,” he stated.
