Atia Figo Awonekai, Parliamentary Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency of the Upper East Region has donated cash amount of GH¢5,000 to the Upper East Regional Hospital to aid in the operationalization of a hemodialysis center.
Mr. Awonekai, who doubles as the Upper East Regional Secretary of the NPP, disclosed that he prevailed upon parliamentary candidates of the party in the region to support the ongoing efforts to establish a center, a plea the candidates at the time who were confirmed after going unopposed have responded positively.
Having become a parliamentary candidate himself and a one-time claims manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme at the hospital and rising to become the Health Service Workers Union Branch Chairman of the Regional Hospital, Upper East National Executive Council Member of Health Services Workers Union, and eventually Head of Revenue at the Regional Hospital, he found it prudent to go back to the facility that helped in shaping his career path to support in their efforts to improve service delivery since he is better placed to understand their struggle in raising revenue.
The campaign to establish the dialysis center at the premier health facility, which happens to be the major referral center in the region, was officially launched in March 2023 and exactly a year after the official launch which has been championed by the media in the region, positive results have been realized.
With donations from benevolent individuals and organizations, three dialysis machines, and a reverse osmosis machine amongst others, have so far been installed with final testing being done to operationalize the kidney management facility.
Speaking to Dreamz News on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 moments after presenting the cash sum of GH¢5,000, Figo Awonekai, said he is delighted to be back at the facility 4 years after officially exiting to support a good initiative.
Apart from the money, he will be providing the facility with ten boxes of street lights which contain two (2) each making it 20 lamps to improve visibility and security at night.
“Four years after moving from the hospital and back here, I can see some progress. I heard about the dialysis center on your network and I initially spoke to the parliamentary candidates we had at the time to support and those three, I am told donated to the facility. Subsequently, after becoming parliamentary candidate, I decided to give a donation of GH¢5000 and to provide them with street lights to improve security.” He stated.
He further commended the generous donations of the public and the media for driving a campaign for the establishment of the center.
“I want to commend the media in the region because on this dialysis center, you people did so well and I think it has paid off. I will like to urge residents especially those in politics to lobby more to support the region and the constituency.”
