The selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will have no significant impact on the fortunes of the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the December polls, Peter Ayinbisa, Upper East Regional Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party has said.

Peter Ayinbisa contended that  Prof. Opoku-Agyemang failed to live up to expectations during her tenure as Education Minister and thus, has no track record to win support for the NDC’s 2024 ticket.

While acknowledging her as good person with impeccable academic record, he argued that she failed, as Minister, to address pertinent issues confronting education in the country and had actually plunged the sector into crisis.

This, he believes, does not make the former minister of education the right candidate to help the NDC and its flagbearer’s quest to win the upcoming elections.

“Prof. Jane as a person, I think that, she is a fine good woman. She is a fine person in terms of academic qualification and competence, I think she’s a good person. But what does she bring to the table? What does she add to the NDC ticket? What does she bring to help John Mahama to win the elections?”

He added, “For me and where I sit and my political, it is just like old wine. This time not in a new bottle but in same old bottle. So nothing has changed. So very little very late to add any significant progress to the NDC. Jane will not help make John to become president again in this country”.

The NDC’s flagbearer, yesterday, announced the former education minister as his running-mate.

This was the party’s National Executive Council and Council of Elders approved of her nomination.

Mr. Mahama, in his last attempt to return to the presidency in 2020, nominated Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as his running-mate.

Although some within the NDC had pushed for her replacement with someone they said could succeed him as leader, the former president maintained her.

Making the announcement, Mr. Mahama explained that, “Her integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana make her the ideal candidate to join me in leading our party to victory in the upcoming elections”.
