Ghanaians are to enjoy free supply of water for the next three months. This follows extension of the free water policy by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuf-Addo to the end of the year.
A statement dated September 23, 2020 and signed by the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah said President Akufo-Addo has extended the “Free Water for all Ghanaians” from October 1 to December 31, 2020.
The statement explained that the extension is to ensure the continuous observance of the Covid-19 safety protocols by Ghanaians particularly the hygienic protocols which requires hand washing under running water as part of measures to fight the pandemic.
“The general public is hereby informed that H. E. the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended the policy on ‘Free Water For All Ghanaians’ for another three months from 1st October to 31st December, 2020,” the statement said.
“This is to enable Ghanaians continue with the protocols especially the washing of hands under running water, to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic,” it added.
The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources appealed to consumers to utilize the water supplied judiciously in observing the protocols.
“The Ministry appeals to consumers to use water judiciously in the observance of the protocols”.
The Ministry also admonished landlords and tanker service providers to desist from “charging or selling water to consumers as Government is paying for the water.”
As part of measures to cushion Ghanaians against the economic hardships occasioned by the covid-19 pandemic, the Government absorbed the cost of water supply to Ghanaians for the months of April, May and June.
Government at the period also fully absorbed the electricity bills of all life-line electricity consumers and 50 percent for consumers above life-line.
The Government later extended the absorption of the cost of water supply to Ghanaians for another three months, from July to September whiles the free supply of electricity for lifeline consumers was extended to the end of the year.
