The Paramount Queen Mother of the Bongo Traditional Area, Pognaba Christiana Ngee, is calling on men to stop fuelling prostitution by not patronizing them to bring the act to an end.
It is often said that prostitution is the oldest profession in the world aside midwifery but for the Paramount Queen Mother, men are the driving force of prostitution since they patronize their activities.
She is of a firm conviction that prostitution will end if men, who form the core of the clientele base, decide not go in for prostitutes.
It is her considered view that any trader who takes her goods to the market but constantly fails to get the needed customers on a couple of occasions after displaying such goods, will cease to send them to the market again since there is no patronage.
It is estimated that nearly 60,049 of females engage in prostitution. This represents 0.76% of females aged in my 15-49 years.
Apart from people raising moral issues for which they think that efforts must be made to bar the practice, there are concerns about the spread of diseases including HIV which has a prevalence of 4.67% amongst female sex workers in Ghana.
Prostitution is also a key driver of the trafficking of many young girls especially from Nigeria to Ghana under the pretext of securing them well paying jobs.
It is on this score that the Queen Mother of Bongo is urging men to desist from patronizing them in a bid to end the practice.
She was speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement on maintaining peace before, during and after election 2024, organized by the Navrongo -Bolgatanga Diocesan Development Office “NABOCADO”.
“Prostitution, it’s men who are promoting it. If men stop following the prostitutes, they will change their minds and get settled, become responsible ladies in society. Men influence it by following them, giving them money and sending them to their hiding places for self satisfaction”.
She continued, “they are going from man, collecting money and sleeping with them so if they come to you and you don’t give them, how will they come to you again? And others also stay away from them, won’t they stop? They will force to stop whether they like it or not”.
