The Upper East Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Donatus Akamukre says he is surprised that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has failed to dismiss its flagbearer for purportedly backstabbing the party.

Speaking in an interview on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM, Donatus Akamukre said Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia betrayed the Akufo-Addo government and brought the governing party’s name into disrepute when he described himself as driver’s mate and should be expelled from the party.

“He has accepted that NPP has failed that’s why he doesn’t want to associate himself with it. I am surprised that NPP people would not take this man on and sack him but they have allowed him to be there,” he said.

“Because he is not NPP. If he is NPP, this is a political party system. NPP is ruling this country. We have been saying the governing NPP, is that not it? And he is a member of the governing NPP. The man is now disassociating himself that what NPP did, he wasn’t part, was not given the opportunity to say anything so he is not part”.

The Vice-President, who doubles as flagbearer of the NPP speaking at a public forum to present his vision for the country, equated his position to that of a diver’s mate and asked Ghanaians to elevate him to the post of a driver so that he will chart a new path.

He pledged to implement measures that will reduce cost of living including abolishing taxes imposed by the Akufo-Addo-led government, which he is a key member.

He also spoke about his role as chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT), stating that the EMT has no decision making powers but advisory.

The pronouncements by the Vice-President, many say, are subtle attempt to distance himself from the performance of the government and absolve himself from blame for the prevailing crisis.

Donatus Akamukre, who agreed with this assertion, argued that Dr. Bawumia literally discredited the record of the government, adding that he (Akamukre) would have asked for disciplinary actions to be instituted against the flagbearer leading to his expulsion from the NPP if he were a member of the party.
