The West Mamprusi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has directed mobile money vendors in the area to close their daily operations by 5 pm.
This comes in the wake of increasing robbery attacks in the Municipality, particularly the capital Walewale, targeting mobile money vendors.
A recent attack on a vendor in the capital resulted in the death of two people including the mobile money operator and injury to 7 others.
The police service has since arrested two persons in connection with the incident and said it is on a manhunt for others suspected perpetrators.
In a bid to address the incessant attacks, the Municipal Security Council has instructed vendors in the area to close at 5 pm.
Aremeyaw Somo Lucky, who is the Municipal Chief Executive for the West Mamprusi Municipality, explained that the directive is part of a raft of measures to curb such violent crimes in the area.
“The arrangements earlier that we made, robbers do not have access to getting people to attack. Now, their main target is the mobile money vendors. So now the security decided that by 5 pm every day in the evening, every mobile money vendor should close and move back to where he or she comes from so that alone will help to reduce the abnormality in the Municipality,” he stated in an interview on JoyNews TV.
“Secondly, we are also looking at periodic search of vehicles – motorbikes that they use to perpetrate those crimes and the vehicles that they use. And also, unlawful possession of ammunition”.
