Politician Hajia Rabi Salifu is advising women to strive to set themselves up and not solely depend on men for their livelihood.
Hajia Rabi, who is the Deputy National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), says although the African tradition enjoins men to support their female counterparts, women should empower themselves to make them functional in society.
“ I am directing this to my colleague ladies, women and mothers, from home, involve your boys and girls to build up. Let the girl know that she needs to take her book and read. Let her know that she needs to take her life seriously and let her know that she should think beyond dependence on a man. Men are in to support us, I will not run away from that” she states in an interview on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM.
She notes that unlike in the olden days, the present-day men look out for female partners, who can add value to their lives and homes hence, her counsel to women to not be comfortable depending on others for their needs.
“Today, especially the gen Z, they will tell you ‘I want a woman in future who will be able to earn some salaries so that she supports to make a very good complement’ The dynamic has changed, the narrative has changed,” she stressed.
The politician gave this advice while speaking on Ghana’s efforts to ensure gender equality and empower women.
She observes that the country has made some level of progress in curbing gender discrimination thereby creating a safer space for women to rise to the top echelon of decision making.
She, however, wants females, who get such opportunities, to help completely eliminate stereotypes against women in society by making a mark in their fields of endeavour.
“What I am saying is that women who have found themselves in quite privileged or higher levels, be it regional, national, international, wherever you are, lead a good life, let people know that choosing a woman isn’t a mistake,” she advises.
