TANGOBA ABAYAGE - FORMER UPPER EAST REGIONAL MINISTER

Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage has been commended for her efforts aimed at getting the Regional Capital and other Municipalities a new network of streets and traffic terminals.

Until recently, Bolgatanga had its traffic terminals going defunct, a situation that was largely blamed on the obsolete state of the traffic terminals while streetlights along the major streets of the township went dead for several months. Though there have been regular repairs of the virtually irredeemable street light and traffic installations, the electronic facilities hardly functioned for a week without going dead.

The undesirable development sparked a wave of protest and birthed a media campaign for the regional capital to be lit. Residents raised issues of insecurity and threatened safety on the township roads.

According to the Upper East Regional Director of Urban Roads, Peter Amoako, the Regional Minister was instrumental in securing the contract for the new setup of street lights and new traffic terminals for Bolgatanga, Navrongo and Bawku.

Mr. Amoako indicated that with the new contract for the installation of modern traffic lights, Ms. Tangoba Abayage was able to lobby for Navrongo to get its first traffic lighting system and replacement of terminals in Bawku.

He said her persistent efforts and push for the project to be realized was what has accounted for the installation of the new traffic system in Bolgatanga and the two other municipalities in the region.

“She made a strong case for a new contract for the traffic lights for the region during a stakeholder meeting of Regional Ministers with my Directors, Sector Minister and the Contractors about the traffic and streetlight. I must say, her consistent pressure for this project is what has yielded the success we are seeing today. She must be commended for that,” he said on Bolgatanga based A1 Radio monitored by dreamzfmonline.com.

He added that Navrongo has been apportioned two terminals to regulate vehicular movement at the Prisons and UDS intersections while Bawku Municipality will also receive new installations but that will have to be delayed because of the ongoing construction of the road.

It will be recalled that Ms. Tangoba Abayage at a press briefing to mark her 100 days in office disclosed that reviving the old aged defunct traffic and Street lighting systems in Bolgatanga will cost a colossal amount of money but assured that efforts were made to secure the new setup.

The multimillion cedi project will see to the installation of additional traffic terminals at some intersections including the popular hospital roundabout, stadium junction and library junction.
