The vice president bemoaned the cost government has to incur due to the financial sector crisis. He said government has exceeded its budget as result of the collapse of the financial institutions and the payment of affected customers’ investments coupled with the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which has compelled government to provide relief packages for the citizens
He however maintained that the over-expenditure by government is to protect livelihood of people while ensuring that people do not lose confidence in investing in financial institutions. He applauded his party’s government for its ability to settle the customers of the defunct micro finance company touting the payments as a major achievement.
“This is a major achievement. I mean the collapse happened under the previous government. We are now taking all of these collapse institutions and paying them back what they deposited. It is costing government but we believe that it is important to sanitize the system and also maintain confidence in the system,” he added.
