DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA- VICE PRESIDENT OF GHANA

Vice President Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia has said the New Patriotic Party was surprised at the failure of the National Democratic Congress to construct the Bolgatanga-Bawku road during its eight years of governance.

Dr. Bawumia who is on a two day working visit to the Upper East region paid a visit to some broken portions of the road which was caused by heavy flooding of the White Volta.

According to him, it is incredible for the previous NDC administration to have failed to complete the construction of the road especially in the face of obvious records that the Upper East region has been favorable to the party.

Parts of the road in Kobore in the Bawku West District, have been cutoff making it impossible for vehicles to get into Bawku or the regional capital, Bolgatanga.

“Bolga-Bawku road is a very important road. It is a Trans-National highway and we were very very surprised in a way that this road was not constructed in the eight years of the NDC. This road is economically very important, it goes through nine Constituencies. Constituencies that the NDC gets majority of the support from,” he said on Ura Radio in Bolgatanga.

He continued: “So one would have thought that NDC would have shown more commitment in completing the road. I call the contractors regularly to get updates. So when we settled on the financing, I wanted them to work on the Zuarungu to the Tax Rank stretch. So if the water subsides, they will work on the damaged portions and continue with the rest of the work”.

Though former President John Dramani Mahama cut sod for work to commence on the road in July 2016 during his ‘Accounting to the People Tour’ of the Upper East region, Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia described the move as a deceit of the chiefs and people of the Bawku zone who were assembled for the event.

As part of the tour to affected areas, the Vice President presented relief items to the flood victims and a cash amount of Ghc10.000 to the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO.
