The Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso is currently spilling about 29 million gallons of water per minute.

This according to Vice President Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia is a much higher volume of water dispatched from the dam as compared to previous years.

“As at last year they were spilling around 8 million gallons a minute. We were reasonably able to control it. Last year a lot of desilting of rivers took place and the impact of the spillage was relatively controlled. This year instead of the 8 million gallons [they started with about 4 million] went up to 8 million and they are now spilling about 29 million gallons a minute,” he said.

The large spillage has been partly blamed for the recent flood situation that has hit the Upper East and North East regions.

Dr. Bawumia who visited the Bawku West District where a portion of the Bolgatanga-Bawku has been cut off assured that government is on track to finding an everlasting solution to the perennial flooding by constructing the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam at a cost of about $1 billion.

The Vice President sympathized with residents and travelers who have been affected by the disaster and assured if government’s support to them in the form of reliefs.
