The 2024 presidential election could be pushed into a runoff should former flagbearer aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen break away from the party and contest on his own, Executive Director of Global Info Analytics has said.
Dr. Musah Dankwah said Mr. Kyerematen is a formidable candidate and thus, could win a considerable number of floating votes as well as polled some from the two main political parties if he runs in next year’s polls.
He stated that if that happens, none of the two parties will able to attain the required number of votes to be declared winner thus, will force the election into a runoff in which Mr. Kyerematen will be the kingmaker.
“If you have a formidable person like Alan going as independent and he’s able to win more of the floating voters than currently he does and he is able to poll a good number from the NDC, no doubt, there will be a runoff,” he stated in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM.
“Then if there’s a runoff then he becomes the kingmaker and probably will enter into some sort of deal either with the current administration or with the NDC”.
He, however, does not foresee the former Trades Minister aligning with his party in case of a rerun.
“But I can’t see him entering a deal with the current administration because the mood of the nation currently is against the current administration”.
Dr. Musah Dankwah said this in reaction to calls on Mr. Kyerematen to run for the highest office of the land in the 2024 Elections as an independent candidate.
The former Trade and Industry Minister, yesterday, announced his pull-out from the presidential contest.
He cited unfair treatment, intimidation of delegates and attacks on his supporters in the just ended Super Delegates Conference of the party as basis for his decision.
There have since been calls on him to run as an independent candidate.
Dr. Dankwah believes he could do some considerable damage to the chances of the two main parties should he go independent.
