Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah has reiterated his claim that the current Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare is in constant contact with former president, John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Alex Mensah told Parliament Adhoc Committee probing the alleged plot to remove the IGP that he had intel that Dr. Dampare constantly communicates with the former leader with the hope that he will be maintained if Mr. Mahama wins the 2024 Elections.

The senior police officer said this during today’s sitting of the committee.

He is being interrogated over a leaked tape in which a voice purported to be his is heard plotting with others including a former Northern Regional of the governing NPP to oust the IGP.

COP Alex Mensah could be heard in the tape saying  that Dr. Akuffo-Dampare is a sympathizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and that he has been in touch with Mr. Mahama, who is leader of the party.

When he was asked by a member of the committee, James Agalga whether he had said what has been attributed to him in the tape, he answered in the affirmative, stating that his claim was based on an intel.

He, however, declined when the committee asked that he shares his intel with them.

“I said it. (The IGP is always talking to president Mahama) that’s from my intelligence. I don’t want to share my intelligence with you”.

Mr. Alex Mensah also reiterated his position that the IGP is mismanaging the affairs of the police.

Explaining his claim, he alleged that Dr. Dampare has gagged officers in the service including the Public Relations Officers from speaking.

Parliament set up the committee to investigate the matter after content of the leaked tape generated wide public concerns.

Bugri Naabu, who was the first witness to appear before the committee, confirmed the authenticity of the tape, stating that he had recorded it to protect the interest of his party.

He also named COP Alex Mensah and two other officers as the personnel who were captured in the tape conversing with him about plans to remove Dr. Akuffo-Dampare.
