The Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School, the premier girls’ senior high school in the Upper East Region has had the school’s 50th anniversary officially launched with a strong appeal by school authorities for support to improve infrastructure in a bid to end the double-track system.
Established in 1956 as Bolga Government Girls’ Middle Boarding and later became Bolga Women Training College and finally made a girls’ secondary school in April 1973 with a first intake of 35 students, the school currently has a population of 3206 and maintained its position as a category A school has gained popularity as one of the best girls’ senior high schools in Ghana.
In October 2022, the school placed 4th in National Renewable Energy Challenge organized by the National Energy Commission. BOGISS was in the competition with six schools from six regions after winning the regional level competition. The 4th position saw the school receive a reward of 38,000 cedis.
Speaking Friday, June 2, 2023, during the launch of the school’s anniversary held under the theme: “Girl child education, a critical tool for national development.” Headmistress of BOGISS, Patricia Agoteba Anaba, indicated that the golden jubilee anniversary is a moment of celebration and a period for sober reflection.
According to her, BOGISS can pride itself as one of the best girls’ senior high schools in the country.
While eulogizing past headmistresses of the school, she noted that the school has successfully trained and shaped the future of girls in the Upper East Region and Ghana who are serving in various fields and contributing to national development.
“In 2019 the school qualified for the National Science and Maths Quiz. In 2020, 2021, and 2023, the school continuously won the regional cook art competition and in 2023, the placed 4th in the National Cook Art Competition. In 2022, the school won the regional renewable energy challenge and placed 4th in the national competition, and was awarded trophies and a total sum of 38,000 cedis. In 2023, the school won the 1st position in the maiden National Cyber Competition held in the region.” She stated.
She disclosed that two projects will be announced as Jubilee projects for consideration as she highlights the challenges of the school as it seeks to end the double-track system.
“On November 4 at the climax, I shall bring before the school management board, two projects for consideration. Notwithstanding these achievements, we have challenges which include, inadequate furniture, and inadequate classrooms to run a single track. Inadequate staff housing and lack of reservoir for the storage of water for distribution to the whole school.” She stated in her address hoping to court support from stakeholders for the school.
Prior to officially launching the anniversary, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, urged authorities and students of the school to focus on achieving greater heights adding, the students should take advantage of the implementation of the free SHS program to empower themselves for a brighter future.
He further appealed to parents to assist their children and the school as he assures the school authorities and teachers of his outfit’s support to help them achieve their desire of running a single track with improved infrastructure.
